About Penrose
Julie Penrose
Spencer Penrose was born in 1865 in Philadelphia and came to Colorado Springs in 1891, seeking success in the West. Through partnerships, especially with Charles Tutt, he found incredible wealth in mining ventures such as the Utah Copper Company. Though once a determined bachelor, his life changed after falling in love with Julie McMillan, a cultured and resilient widow who had moved to Colorado Springs with her ill husband and children.
The two met socially and reconnected on a ship voyage to Europe. They married in 1906, and Julie’s influence inspired Spencer to invest in projects that would benefit the people of Colorado Springs. His major legacies include the Broadmoor Hotel, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun.
Julie Penrose, born in 1870, was a generous philanthropist whose love for the arts and people guided her later years. After Spencer’s death in 1939, she continued his charitable work and made major contributions to schools, hospitals (including a $3.2 million grant for Penrose Hospital), and cultural institutions.
Julie died in 1956 and was laid to rest beside her husband at the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, a lasting symbol of their shared love for Colorado Springs and their enduring legacy.
Annually, Colorado public schools are required to update and submit to the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) a plan for improvement of instruction. Our school's most recent version on file with CDE is available at:http://www.cde.state.co.us/schoolview/performance. As our improvement plan is a plan to continuously improve instruction and revised regularly as we receive updated, relevant information. The most up-to-date plan is available upon request from the school principal.
